The calculation is one volume formula plus one weight conversion. The only traps are the thickness unit and remembering that asphalt is sold by weight.
The volume step: Volume in cubic feet equals length times width times thickness, with every measurement in feet. Because length and width are in feet but thickness is in inches, divide the thickness by 12 first. A 3-inch layer is 0.25 feet, not 3. Skip this and the result is twelve times too large — the most common asphalt-order mistake. The calculator does this conversion automatically.
From volume to tonnage: Asphalt is ordered by the ton, so the volume has to become weight. Multiply the cubic feet by the asphalt density — standard hot mix is about 145 pounds per cubic foot — then divide by 2,000 to convert pounds to tons. Why density matters: Not every asphalt is the same weight. Dense-graded hot mix is heavy at around 145 pounds per cubic foot; porous asphalt, full of drainage voids, is lighter near 125.
